1. My controller is working, but the heads are not popping up, what is wrong? a) First check to see if your rain sensor is "active" or if a wire has been cut. Some controllers will allow you to override the rain sensor with a switch - others you have to disconnect the rain sensor. b) Check to make sure the water to the sprinkler system has not been turned off. The shut-off device is generally located near your water meter in a rectangular valve box and usually has a green lid. 2. Do I need to do anything to my system for winter? In general, you do not need to do anything to your system, except turn your controller to "off". However, if you have a shut-off device or backflow preventer that is above ground, you will need to drain your system. Please call the office for more information. 3. How often should I be watering my grass? City of Austin recommends a five-day watering schedule. 4. How long should I water my grass? Grass, shade, and hills should be taken into consideration when scheduling your minutes. a) Spray heads and risers - 20 minutes will produce approx. 1/2" of rain. b) Rotor heads - 50 minutes will produce approx. 1/2" of rain. 5. What do I do if I have a valve that is running all the time or a constant leak? Turn off the water to the sprinkler system at the shut-off. This device is generally located near your water meter, in the ground in a rectangular valve box with a green lid. Remove the lid and turn "one" of the handles so it is perpendicular to the device. Then call in or e-mail your service call. When a valve sticks, it usually has a rock stuck in it so it won't close or it is old and needs to be replaced. 6. Why does my controller keep cycling over and over? You probably have too many "start" times programmed in your controller. You only need one start time for each "program". Do not enter a start time for each zone (valve). 7. Why do I have low pressure on one or all of my zones (valves)? a) There could be a broken head or pipe on a zone. b) The shut-off device could be partially turned down c) There could be blockage at the valve or the water meter 8. If I am having dirt and new landscaping installed, in what order should the work be completed? Do all the dirt work first, then have the irrigation system installed and then the landscaping installed last, which includes laying sod. TIPS *Run your "test cycle" monthly to visually inspect for broken head or leaks. * Mow lawns at a higher setting. * Install rain sensors to conserve water when it rains. * Use multi-cycle watering and reduce times on each zone for deeper watering. |
